Underglaze Print Pattern: 6021 - Petite

The black diamonds and squares pattern on the border of this small oval bowl is a match for the Petite pattern found in two Carr catalogs. However, the ornament that interrupts Petite with its three yellow tulips is an unknown addition to the pattern.

It is not known if this combination had a pattern name unto itself or if it might have been an experimental piece that saw a limited run.

It seems clear from looking at the detail that both parts of the pattern were not made from a single metal pattern cylinder, as seen on this page, because you can see where the Petite pattern was cut in order to insert the floral ornament.

The backstamp, J. McD & S., stands for Jones, McDuffee, and Stratton, a Boston, Mass., distributor founded in 1810. According to the company's100th anniversary brochure, it was"the largest wholesale and retail crockery, china, and glassware establishment in the country." The backstamp provides no clue as to the bowl's age because the distributor was in business both before and after Carr's run.

Thanks so much to Stephanie Carr – ebay seller jerseygirl6963 – for making this bowl part of our collection.
